We are building the design tool we always wanted.
A decade of designing health products taught us how the good teams actually work. It also taught us how slow and fragmented the tools they reach for still are.
Hi, I’m Jameson Daines. I’m a Senior Product Designer, and I’ve spent about ten years designing health products inside big healthcare orgs and small startups. That has put me in conference rooms in San Francisco, Seoul, and São Paulo, arguing with PMs, clinicians, regulators, engineers, and patients about how to make health software that does not make people miserable.
I have watched smart teams spend six months on user research, another six months on stakeholder alignment, then ship something no patient ever asked for. I have also watched other teams skip research entirely because the deadline was immovable, then ship features that fell apart the first time a real user touched them.
The issue is not that healthcare designers are bad at their jobs. Most are great. The issue is that the tools they have to work with were not built for the kind of work they do. Generic AI design tools are optimized for marketing pages and SaaS landing flows. They do not understand HIPAA. They do not understand prior authorization. They do not understand that “the user” is sometimes a 63-year-old caregiver trying to get a Medicare denial overturned for her father.
Healthful is the tool I wanted during those projects: design thinking the way I was taught it, with less of the busywork that makes the discipline feel unaffordable on a real timeline.
It is built around the classic five phases: define, empathize, ideate, prototype, launch. That sequence has decades of research behind it and thousands of shipped products to show for it. AI does not change the sequence. It just means a small team can work at the pace of a much bigger one.
We are starting with a small group of health product teams in private beta. Early members get founding pricing, weekly office hours with me, and real input on what we build next. If you are shipping into healthcare and anything above sounds like your week, get in touch.
Four principles we try very hard to live by.
Empathy is non-negotiable
Every feature has to make life measurably better for a patient, a provider, or a caregiver. If a feature cannot clear that bar, it does not ship.
AI handles the grind, people make the calls
The copilot exists so designers can spend less time drafting their fourth persona variant and more time on the judgment calls AI has no business making.
Designed around teams
Solo design tools assume a single heroic creator. Real health software comes out of messy multi-disciplinary teams, and Healthful is built for that reality.
Healthcare-first, not bolted on
A generic design tool is not going to suddenly understand HIPAA, a clinical workflow, or how a payer thinks. Healthcare context is baked into the product instead of retrofitted.
