Our manifesto · By Jameson Daines

What we believe.

Six convictions about healthcare, design, and AI. Plus the line we are not crossing while we build Healthful.

1

Healthcare software is the biggest unfinished design job in tech.

Every other consumer-facing industry has had a design overhaul in the last twenty years. Banking replaced paper checks. Streaming replaced the video store. Calendars are no longer stapled to the fridge. That is a wild amount of change in one lifetime.

Meanwhile, healthcare is still running on fax machines and patient portals that lock you out every ninety days. Designers know this is absurd. Patients live with it. We think it is the largest unfinished design job left in mainstream software, and we are impatient for it to get finished.

2

Generic AI design tools are not going to fix this.

The AI design tools that are getting a lot of attention right now are built for marketing pages and SaaS landing flows. They are great at generating pretty screens. They have no idea what HIPAA is, what a prior authorization looks like, or why a clinician cannot leave the patient-facing screen open during a visit.

A pretty wireframe that ignores those constraints is not neutral. It is actively misleading. It pushes teams toward designs that test well in a portfolio and fall apart the first day they touch a real clinical workflow.

3

Design thinking is the part that is missing.

People like to dismiss design thinking as a workshop activity. That is a lazy take. Design thinking is a discipline for going from "we do not know what to build" to "we shipped something patients came back to," and it works.

Define, empathize, ideate, prototype, launch. Nothing about that sequence is arbitrary. It is how most of the health products you can think of that actually help anyone got made. Teams that skip phases ship features no patient asked for. Teams that run all five phases the old-fashioned way are too slow to compete in 2026. That is the bind we are trying to get designers out of.

Healthful is the speed fix that does not require throwing out the discipline.

4

AI is good at the tedious parts. People are good at the rest.

Synthesizing 47 user interviews. Drafting a third version of a problem statement. Building a persona variant. Rewriting a pitch deck in your stakeholder’s voice for the fourth time. These are useful, they are valuable, and they will erode a designer’s will to live by Tuesday. AI is genuinely good at them.

Deciding which insight from those 47 interviews actually matters. Knowing which patient’s story should drive the whole project. Building the trust that gets a clinician to try your thing for a week. Those are not things AI should be doing, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

Healthful is built around that line. The copilot handles the grinding work. You make the calls that need a human in the room.

5

Health products come out of teams, not lone geniuses.

There is a tired tech story about the solo genius designer who single-handedly reshapes an industry from a coffee shop. In healthcare specifically, that story is almost never what happened. The products that actually moved the needle came out of teams with a designer, a clinician, a PM, an engineer, a patient advocate, and usually someone from compliance who can explain regulation in a way a normal person can hear.

Tools that optimize for a single heroic creator miss the unit of work that matters. Healthful is built for teams, which means it has to embrace the messy, async, multi-disciplinary reality of how health software actually gets made.

6

Our pledge.

Healthful will always put a human in the loop. We are not going to auto-publish a design without a person reviewing it. We are not going to fabricate user data and call it research. We are not going to ship AI features that are secretly a workaround for empathy.

We are going to publish the prompts we use. We are going to keep the prompt cards free, forever, because the discipline is more important than whatever product we happen to be selling this year.

And we are going to build the tool that lets your team ship the kind of healthcare software you would want your mother to use.

If you believe this too, come build it with us.

Healthful is in private beta right now. The first teams in are the ones who feel this pain the hardest, and who are willing to put up with rough edges to help us get it right.
